A Farewell to Lyle Overbay

News has broken in the past few hours that the Pittsburgh Pirates are in the process of acquiring Derrek Lee and cash for a single A prospect.  This marks the end of the Lyle Overbay era as it is pretty much a given that Lyle will take his wRC+ of 80 and sub par defense straight to the bench (or maybe he’ll just be cut.  I wouldn’t care either way).  Tough luck for Lyle.  This was undeniably the worst season of his career.  With Lyle leaving us, I felt it was only fair to write him a goodbye poem.

One fine day on the 14th of December

A signing was made that we all will remember

We signed a first basemen with pizazz and style

He came from Toronto and his name was Lyle

He brought experience and a bat like no other

At least he’d be better than the older LaRoche brother

People mocked him at first, made fun of his name

Overpay they would shout at him during the game

But he showed them wrong, he came to play

He hit 4 home runs in the month of May!

But the season wore on and took it’s tolls

Soon Lyle’s glove seemed to have a bunch of holes

Balls rolled past him, error after error

The people of Pittsburgh cried in terror

He stopped hitting the ball, his at bats I would dread

He couldn’t hit the floor if he fell out of bed

Lyle needed to go, it was something we all could see

The Bucs called Baltimore, the subject: Derrek Lee

When Lyle got the news, he said, “Man this sucks

But you people still owe me five million bucks!”
